“Guest Speakers” in the virtual library
Seventh graders “meet” author Daphne Benedis-Grab and graphic artist Justin Leiter in a series of Week 2 “Zoom” classes
Students from several classes logged into a video classroom visit with author Daphne Benedis-Grab(top right). The writer read aloud from her novel, The Angel Tree, and discussed the writing process. She explained how outlines help her organize her stories. As for advice to young writers, Benedis-Grab said, “Write. A lot. All the time. About anything.”
Students also had the opportunity to “meet” illustrator Justin Leiter (center). A graduate of MS 202, Leiter told students as a teenager, he was always doodling, always had a sketchbook in his hand, even in classes. “But I was still listening to the teacher!” he laughed.
Leiter shared his amazing artwork, from graphic prints used for children’s wear to fantastical robots and pop culture figures, Leiter’s bold colors and engaging designs prompted praise from the students and lots of questions. He explained that he preferred drawing with ink and paper to a computer and found that a childhood experience living in Japan influenced his art. Leiter shared with students how he originally studied film, and then art in college and began working as a graphic artist almost immediately after school. Students also wanted to know if he liked anime (he does) and Star Wars (absolutely.)
Both speakers took time to answer students’ questions and give advice. It was an amazing experience for the second week of virtual learning.
