Teachers and Administrators prepare

Once the decision was made to shift all NYC students to online learning, schools, including MS 202, began to prepare. Staff reported to work for three days of planning and training. Devices were handed out to over 120 families, to help all students continue the learning online. Google Classroom, a platform that many students and teachers already used, was rolled out in every class. Mr. Fitzgerald acknowledged how unprecedented the situation was, but declared MS 202 was better prepared to use technology to continue learning than schools in many other places.

Grade 8 Dean Ms. Brennan began sending daily video messages to her students, reassuring them and offering support. 3/19/20

More on the preparation for online learning

March 15, 2020

The announcement came on a Sunday afternoon.

Just a few days early, on March 11, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak was now a "pandemic" - acknowledging the rapid spread of the illness worldwide. Still, when Mayor De Blasio announced the closure of New York City schools, there was an element of shock.
